Palm Sunday – 2025

Palm Sunday, a significant day in the Roman Catholic Church, marks the beginning of Holy Week, the week leading up to Easter.

  • Commemoration:
    • It commemorates Jesus Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem, as described in the Gospels.
    • The name “Palm Sunday” comes from the palm branches that the crowds waved as they welcomed Jesus.
  • Observances:
    • A key feature of Palm Sunday services is the blessing and distribution of palm branches.
    • These palms symbolize the branches that people laid before Jesus as he entered Jerusalem.
    • The liturgy also includes the reading of the Passion of Christ, which recounts his suffering and death. Therefore, the services hold both joy, and somber reflection.
  • Significance:
    • Palm Sunday serves as a transition from the Lenten season of penance to the solemn observance of Holy Week.
    • It is the begining of the most holy week of the liturgical calender for Roman Catholics.
  • The date of palm sunday is the sunday prior to easter sunday.

Essentially, Palm Sunday is a day of both celebration and solemn reflection, marking the beginning of the most sacred week in the Christian calendar.
